Who we are and how to contact us

PN Media is an independent bilingual news service based in Auckland, New Zealand. This statement applies when you use pnmedia.co.nz, contact our newsroom, send a news tip, join a newsletter or otherwise communicate with us.

For a privacy question or a request about your information, email PN Media’s Privacy Officer at contact@pnmedia.co.nz and use ‘Privacy’ in the subject line. We may ask for enough information to verify your identity before acting on a request.

Personal information we collect

We may collect information you choose to give us, including your name, email address, phone number, location, enquiry, newsletter preference, news tip, supporting material and any other details in your message. If you give us information about another person, you must have authority to do so.

When you use the website, our hosting and security systems may automatically receive limited technical information such as your IP address, device and browser type, pages requested, timestamps and error or security logs. We also store your language and theme choices on your device so the site can remember them.

How we collect and use information

We usually collect personal information directly from you. We use it to respond to enquiries, assess and follow up news tips, manage newsletter requests, provide and improve the website, protect our systems, keep appropriate newsroom and business records, and meet legal obligations.

Providing information is generally optional. If you do not provide information needed for a particular request, we may be unable to answer it, investigate a tip or provide the requested service. We will use personal information for the purpose explained when it was collected, a directly related purpose, or another use permitted by law.

News tips and editorial information

Information sent to a newsroom may be sensitive. We limit access to people who need it for editorial, legal, safety or technical reasons. We will take requests for confidentiality seriously, but the ordinary tip form is not a guaranteed anonymous or secure-drop service. We may need to disclose information when required by law or where necessary to address a serious safety risk.

Who may receive your information

Personal information may be available to authorised PN Media staff and contractors, and to service providers that host, secure or operate our website, content system, forms and email services. We ask providers to handle information only for the services they supply to us and to protect it appropriately.

Some providers may store or process information outside New Zealand. Where New Zealand privacy law requires it, we will take reasonable steps to ensure overseas disclosure is protected consistently with the Privacy Act 2020. We may also disclose information where you authorise it, where the law permits or requires it, or in connection with professional advice or a change in ownership of the service.

Cookies, local storage and analytics

PN Media uses a small cookie and browser local storage to remember your language and light or dark theme. Your browser lets you remove or block these, although the site may stop remembering your choices. If we add audience analytics or advertising technology, we will update this statement and provide any choice or notice required by law before using it.

Security and retention

We use reasonable administrative and technical safeguards designed to protect personal information from loss, misuse and unauthorised access or disclosure. No internet service can promise absolute security. We retain personal information only for as long as it is reasonably needed for the purpose it was collected, newsroom accountability, dispute resolution or legal requirements, and then delete or anonymise it where practicable.

Your rights and changes to this statement

Under the Privacy Act 2020, you may ask whether PN Media holds personal information about you, request access to it and ask for it to be corrected. Legal grounds may sometimes limit access. If we do not make a requested correction, you may ask us to attach a statement of correction to the information.

You may unsubscribe from a newsletter using the unsubscribe option in the message. You may also complain to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner if you believe your privacy concern has not been resolved. We may update this statement as our services or legal obligations change, and the review date on this page will show the latest version.
